WELCOME SPEECH: PHILIP SHEPPARD ON IMPROVISING AND INNOVATING: DEVELOPING A CREATIVE APPROACH THAT GIVES YOUR BUSINESS AN EDGE

WELCOME SPEECH: PHILIP SHEPPARD ON IMPROVISING AND INNOVATING: DEVELOPING A CREATIVE APPROACH THAT GIVES YOUR BUSINESS AN EDGE

What goes on in the mind of a world-renowned composer, producer, and cello virtuoso? Philip Sheppard is all of those things, and he does it through technical mastery but also creative thinking that he’s developed throughout his career. Philip uses technology to bring new life to classical music, and his creative thinking led to the invention of the game "Compose Yourself" which lets anyone create symphonies using a special deck of cards. Philip has the unique ability to teach everyone they can think creatively. As a composer, he never has trouble coming up with musical ideas and even creating entire songs on the spot. The creativity a musician uses to improvise on a melody can also be used to develop innovative new ideas and solve real-world problems. In an engaging presentation at WHD.global, Philip will be showing how to apply creative thinking to your work and continually come up with fresh new ideas that give you and your business an edge.

The Digital Battle Against Extortionists, Scammers, Terrorists, and Spies in a World that’s Gone Online

The Digital Battle Against Extortionists, Scammers, Terrorists, and Spies in a World that’s Gone Online

Computer viruses, digital surveillance and service outages have regularly made headlines over the past few years. However, some individuals are on the front lines keeping the digital world safe and free. Mikko Hypponen and his team at F-secure have unearthed some of the biggest digital threats from the 90’s to the present. This included the infamous Sobig and Storm Worms, as well as the Blaster Worm which was responsible for a severe power outage in the North-Eastern US that left 32 million people in the dark. With hundreds of millions of Internet users joining the web from India and China and elsewhere, and as governments, corporations, and criminals becoming more sophisticated at using viruses for surveillance, extortion, and fraud, Mikko asks, what's next? In this WHD.global presentation, Mikko will be drawing on his vast experience and research to explain what the next killer virus is being cooked up, how dangerous it could be, and how we can prepare for it."

The cloud and its whereabouts – Location is key

The cloud and its whereabouts – Location is key

As more workloads are moved off-premise, the question on what cloud to choose and what provider to work with, is high on the agenda of many a European CIO. Cloud computing has gained such trust among decision makers, that 60% of IT will be off-premise by next year. ‘The cloud‘ is not a place, but a consumption model, yet location of data plays an increasing role in the decision process. Issues on security and data sovereignty form a tremendous opportunities for European Service Providers. European regulations like NIS and GDPR are making the case for local Service Providers even stronger. Proximity to the customer, solid in-country data centers, tailor made SLAs and specialized data services are key to SP’s success. The cloud and its whereabouts – or location – is a prime asset in cloud computing.

Let’s make website security great... again!

What do you have in mind when you think about website security? Server infrastructure, HTTPS encryption or reliable DNS servers? The time has come to combine all these elements and to make the implementation quick and user-friendly through one interface!

The effects of Google Chrome’s security initiative are now becoming visible: pages without SSL encryption have been declared "not secure“ since January 2017. Every other domain is now using an SSL certificate. But what about the other half of the domains?

I’ll explain how you can encrypt the missing half of domains with only a few clicks and make your servers faster and safer at the same time. I will also show you how to optimize websites with little effort and how Content Delivery Networks fit in this full-service solution.

Transatlantic Business at Stake – Will Europe Draw its Trumps?

Transatlantic Business at Stake – Will Europe Draw its Trumps?

Since October 2015, the EU-US Safe Harbour protections are gone. This has changed the transatlantic transfer of personal identifiable information. In July 2016 the EU Commission adopted “Privacy Shield” as a valid possibility for legal data transfer. But “Privacy Shield” is under attack – unfettered access of law enforcement and intelligence to personal data of European Citizens are still a daily occurrence.

As if that weren’t enough, with protectionism being on the rise, transatlantic business is facing a lot of risks. How will the political sector respond to the challenges of the new U.S. administration?

Continuous Growth and Sustainability

Continuous Growth and Sustainability

As the amount of data produced daily increases at an exponential and ever faster rate, so does the need to build new DCs and to find suitable COLO locations to meet the industries’ needs. The DC industry is using already few per cent of the global electricity that mounts to several hundred Terawatts. It’s not just electricity what data centres consume. During construction an abundance of steel and other materials are needed to build and equip them for operation. At the same time sustainability and the Green DC concept have become key words that are used to market data centres as environmentally friendly. This presentation explores how can we have such a growth in the business and call it sustainable at the same time?

Domains & Hosting: The Yin & Yang of Our Business

Domains & Hosting: The Yin & Yang of Our Business

Domain names have long been considered a ‘foot-in-the-door’ product. The advent of New gTLDs has reinforced the fact that customers are now looking for more domain options to setup their web presence. Thus, web hosting providers need to lay equal emphasis on their domains business or end up losing to competition. A web host leader of tomorrow can capture a wider user base and enhance its product suite by achieving a strong balance between domain registrations and web hosting products. Through this session, attendees will be taken through simple steps on how they can further boost their domains business.

_____

Through this session, we plan to spread awareness about the various evolving trends in the Web Services market. We intend to highlight how lucrative the SaaS market is getting with every passing minute, among small and medium-sized web hosts.

Note: This session is in no way a pitch for any of LogicBoxes products or services; it is purely informative.

The EU General Data Protection Regulation - expensive changes

The EU General Data Protection Regulation - expensive changes

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU-GDPR), binding on Europe as of 25.05.2018, obliges companies to introduce data protection management. The aim is to ensure the security of personal data in European companies. The new requirements for data processors include the preparation of a list of procedures for the activities they accomplish on behalf of the contract. An additional, existential risk is created by joint and several liability. This is intended to ensure and to provide evidence that the processing of personal data follows the guidelines of the EU-GDPR. But how do you integrate this theory into your business practice? At all: how should a good data protection management according to EU-GDPR look like? - In his short speech, Christian Heutger provides to you the approaches of the implementation of a data protection management.

CISPE Code of Conduct: helping cloud providers and their customers comply with GDRP

CISPE Code of Conduct: helping cloud providers and their customers comply with GDRP

The New European General Data Protection Regulation ('GDPR') is complex and yet very general in scope: it was not conceived against the backdrop of modern cloud computing technologies, yet it imposes many new obligations on cloud providers across Europe, for example, new rules on processing, sub-processing, contracts, security of processing, sub-processing, demonstrating compliance, data breaches notifications and joint liabilities, etc.

The CISPE Data Protection Code of Conduct provides a data protection compliance framework that makes it easier for customers to assess whether cloud infrastructure services being offered by a particular provider are suitable for the processing of personal data they wish to perform and for them to comply with their current obligations and those coming under the GDPR. Its purpose is to facilitate the proper application of the new European rules on data protection from the GDPR and ensure that they use appropriate data protection standards consistent with Europe’s new Data Protection Regulation ('GDPR')

CISPE's ambition is to obtain approval from the European Data Protection Board and the European Commission so that the CISPE Code has general validity throughout the EU, and can be used as a tool by cloud providers’ customers across the EU.

Ding Ding, Are we ready for new gTLDs Round 2?

Ding Ding, Are we ready for new gTLDs Round 2?

The history of the Internet has taught us that tomorrow’s growth businesses, disrupters and viral applications have very short incubation periods. Today, innovation is the key to viral growth, especially with the millennials. The launch of the new gTLD program gave brand holders the opportunity to marry innovation with the ultimate digital marketing tool; one that could provide them with a huge advantage in the digital world. However, five years since the program launched in earnest, we have seen very few organisations make the dotBrand transition. Despite more than 75% of applicants still stalling on the commercial launch of their dotBrand, the pressure is building from a number of angles on a second round, the question is what both types of organisation should be doing today.

The Past, Present and Future of Omnichannel Commerce

Stores with strong omnichannel engagement retain 89% of their customers. Those with weak omnichannel engagement retain only 33% of customers. Consumers have more options for buying than ever before; new touchpoints, new technologies and new payment methods are spreading like wildfire around the retail world. Small businesses need a strategy to address these increasing consumer demands, and the technologies they use must be there to make it easy to keep up with these ever-changing trends. In our session we'll define omnichannel commerce together, learn what each other is doing to enable this for our customers, and hypothesize on the future of commerce and the disruptive technologies we think will play a role.

The Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Technology Behind the World's Largest Network of Adult Sites

The Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Technology Behind the World's Largest Network of Adult Sites

It may come at no surprise that adult websites are among the most popular sites on the web. And the most popular ones - YouPorn, MyDirtyHobby, Pornhub and others - are run by MindGeek, a cutting-edge tech company that just happens to manage risqué content. Like other video streaming sites, it has a highly sophisticated hosting infrastructure for hundreds of millions of users. It streams content, delivers ads, and handles traffic spikes.
Fabian Thylmann - the founder of the company that would become MindGeek - was there at the beginning, managing the rapid growth of MindGeek’s sites in the early days of wide-scale online video.
In this exclusive WHD.global presentation, Fabian will discuss how the company dealt with the rapid popularity of its sites and how its technology-first approach created new solutions to get content to massive numbers of people - even if they won't admit to watching it.

Fabian Thylmann
Founder at MindGeek

Fabian Thylmann

FounderMindGeek
Fabian Thylmann started his programming career right out of school in 1997 by founding a company focused on statistical analysis and high-traffic websites. He then started the Manwin Group (now MindGeek) in 2004 which he grew to be the largest adult entertainment operator in the world in just five years. The sites in its network included YouPorn, PornHub, MyDirtyHobby, Brazzers and others which generated over 16 billion hits per month combined. Fabian stepped down from the company and sold his stake in October 2013 to focus on investing in early-stage startups through his new company, SN Invests, and to operate a co-working space in Brussels called SN-Cube.

Game over? Why it's time for the cloud to grow up...

As AWS powers ahead, and consolidation continues apace, what's the point of selling cloud? The headlines proclaim doom for the industry: even large providers are struggling, and those that aren't are growing through acquisition, not by winning new business. Surely the battle is lost. Or is it? It's time for the cloud to grow up...

Satisfy the need for rapid ecommerce success

Satisfy the need for rapid ecommerce success

Ecommerce sales continue to rise at double digit rates, and are expected to exceed €250bn in Europe in 2017.  SMB commerce solutions are no longer the preserve of only start-ups and online pure-players –existing businesses are increasingly under pressure to optimize and evolve with transactional websites, in order to remain relevant.  We highlight why ecommerce delivery is an important strategic move for web hosts, and the great rewards from expanding beyond simple website plug-ins, or simply hosting Open Source solutions.  This session will explore how providers can best deliver rapid ecommerce success, and win revenues and impacts that drive forward their entire SMB value proposition.

How to win the industry endgame. Survival of the fittest - building a sustainable brand

How to win the industry endgame. Survival of the fittest - building a sustainable brand

For the past decades, the hosting industry was all about technical solutions; providing the most reliable, up to date and streamlined products for an affordable price. This is changing. All the major services have become comparable in terms of pricing and efficiency; we are seeing the same old offers and the same packages across the board. Identifying and communicating USPs as well as offering the best upselling and cross-selling solutions is coming into focus. You need to find YOUR place in this evolving market and identify the real value that your customers are willing to pay for.

The crux of the matter is: are you just a company, or are you a BRAND?

Brand development, sustainability and longevity are the industry’s next big questions. What will YOU reply?

Opportunities for new business have changed dramatically over the past few years with the growing popularity of AWS, Azure and other cloud giants. The market is still growing, but in different ways for different companies. One largely expanding field is the Managed Services Provider (MSP) market, whose providers tend to work with the cloud giants rather than fighting against them. A panel of experts will describe the MSP market, and the opportunities for growth within it.

The Future of the Cloud Industry

The Future of the Cloud Industry

Today, businesses are using the cloud more and more. Some have migrated all or most their applications, data, and even their desktops to cloud providers such as OVH. Others that have ONLY ever known the cloud (like start-ups), rely on the OVH Cloud to reduce time to market and scale their infrastructure along with the success of their innovations. As a European Cloud leader, OVH is experiencing an acceleration in demand as well as an increasing global need. In return, this requires the number of datacenters being set up across the world to be multiplied. But the future of the cloud is not just about infrastructure, servers and bandwidth. It is also the opportunity to choose the type of cloud that best meets your needs. Public, Private, Hybrid—different clouds must be combined to form the infrastructures of tomorrow. This will be the topic of the presentation by Laurent Allard, CEO of OVH.

In 2008, he was recognized as CIO of the year under the category of Transformation. “Being CEO at OVH is the most exciting business experience one can imagine. I oversee the operations of the company as we continue substantial international growth. Software-Defined Storage from a User’s Perspective

Software-Defined Storage from a User’s Perspective

Buzzword or not: Software-defined storage is a hot topic. Running a storage infrastructure based on software vastly simplifies enterprise and service provider infrastructures. It consolidates silos into a single system that runs on heterogeneous standard server hardware. Features like scalability, elasticity and full fault-tolerance ease operations and storage provisioning. But what does all that actually mean for the user? We’ll shed light on the storage self-service shop made possible by software. How can I get SSD-based scratch storage and store the results in an erasure coded archive? Who else is using the infrastructure and how secure is my data? What happens with my data once I’m done? What if I need to reconfigure the system on the fly? Software-defined storage has the answers to those questions.

Swedish by design: True scale-out software defined storage, Compuverde

In Sweden, design and development of new technology are being developed in a radically different way than they are in other places. That is why Compuverde is ten steps in front of the competition in the area of Software Defined Scale-Out Multi-Protocol Storage systems. Carl-Henric will go in to the details of the Compuverde platform and explain why a good design and solid design choices are the only way to create a rock solid software defined storage solution. This can of course only be done by explaining the design itself and some of the choices that follow from good and long thinking about that design. Doing storage in a new and better way, while taking in to account the enormous growth rates of storage capacity today, demands a totally new way of thinking about storing and accessing data. Compuverde and its Swedish Design are what make storage work again.

Revolution or Evolution: how is M&A changing the Hosting market?

Inorganic growth continues to be a popular route to gaining new customers and market share, but is it still all about size? Demand for cloud-enabled, managed security, disaster recovery, backup and CDN is increasing, but is it better to buy or build such managed services to enhance your portfolio? And are these services those that hosting providers should be focusing their strategy on in 2017? In this 30-minute session, Rory Duncan, Research Director with 451 Research outlines the disruptive changes taking place in the M&A space, the opportunity for hosting providers to create new points of differentiation, and how this can enable more effective competition with pure-play cloud providers.
